PERMANENCIA VEGETAL is a sound installation commissioned by the Círculo de Bellas Artes to sonify its first Climate Refuge, which invites reflection on the interconnections within biological communities in the context of the current environmental crisis. It featured more than 300 plants and was conceived as a public and free-access space to take shelter from the summer heat in the heart of Madrid.
It is inspired by ecological succession, a process in which a barren area is progressively colonized by species that enable the development of an ecosystem. The sound pieces are based on sounds that, like living organisms, interweave: roots growing, spores dispersing, tissues retaining water. This soundscape reflects the centuries-long process of forest formation.
The space also featured a guided meditation to encourage reflection and active listening.
